Professor Basile Christaras was born in 1954, in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is Professor of â€œEngineering Geologyâ€ and â€œSoil Mechanicsâ€, at graduate and postgraduate level. He is Director of the â€œLaboratory of Engineering Geology & Hydrogeology (â€œPresidential Degree 314/90â€), in the School of Geology, of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). He studied in the â€œAristotle University of Thessalonikiâ€ and the â€œUniversity P. et M. Curie of Parisâ€. He speaks English, French and Italian, additionally to his Greek mother tongue.
He is a)Chairman of the IAEG Commission 16 (Protection of Ancient Monuments & Historic Sites), b) he served as, President of IGME and c) â€œExpertâ€ on Soil Protection, of the â€œEuropean Federation of Geologistsâ€
He received the following main Distinctions: a) 2015: active Member of the â€œEuropean Academy of Sciences & Artsâ€, b) 2017: â€œHonoris Causaâ€ award, by the â€œGreek Committee of the Engineering Geologyâ€, of IAEG, c) 2018: â€œHonoris Causaâ€ award, by the Rector of AUTH-GR.
During his carrier, he was President and Member of the Administration Consult of Several National and International Organizations.
